Course description

The course addresses fundamental questions about Planet Earth and teaches the basic geological research methods and lines of thought. We will learn about the way Earth was formed, the processes that govern its evolution, both at depth and at the surface, how we know its composition and structure, how life evolved, how the different systems interact – the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, how we reconstruct past environments, past climates, and past geography, what are the energy sources that propel the tectonics, ocean and atmospheric circulations, how we know about the tectonic plates and the occurrence of earthquakes, volcanos, and other natural hazards.
