Course overview

Calculational methods in non-relativistic quantum mechanics and their application to atomic physics

Grade structure:

Assignments – 10%
Final exam – 90%

Week-by-week content

Week 1: Addition of angular momentum.

Week 2: Symmetry in quantum mechanics; rotation group.

Week 3: Perturbation theory for stationary states.

Week 4: Perturbations in the hydrogen atom: Stark effect, relativistic corrections, spin-orbit coupling, hyperfine structure.

Week 5: Tensor operators and the Wigner-Eckart Theorem.

Week 6: Zeeman effect. Variational method.

Week 7: WKB method. Identical particles.

Week 8: Helium atom.

Week 9: Time-dependent perturbation theory; Fermi Golden Rule.

Week 10: Radiative transitions in atoms.

Week 11: Non-relativistic collision theory: phase shifts.

Week 12: Resonances, inelastic collisions, Born approximation.

Week 13: Structure of complex atoms; the Periodic Table.
