Syllabus:
Intro. The evolution of the quantization notion. Experimental background (Blackbody radia tion, photoelectric effect, Compton effect, electron diffraction). Particle wave duality, proba bility waves, wave packets. Bohr atom.
The probabilistic interpretation of the wavefunction. Schrodinger equation. Momentum, position, and energy operators. Probability density, expectation values and observables. Time independent Schrodinger equation, eigenvalues and energy levels. Stationary states. Infinite potential well in one dimension.
Normalization of the wave function. Extension of wave packets: phase and group velocity. Dirac delta function.
Solutions of the Schrodinger equation in onedimension: finite potential well, potential steps. Bound states and scattering states. Quantum tunneling.
Formalism: Eigenvalues and Eigenstates. Hermitian operators and observables. Quantum measurements. Basis transformations. Commutation relations and the uncertainty principle.
Dynamics: Schrodinger and Heisenberg pictures.
Harmonic oscillator in onedimension: algebraic solution and ladder operators.
Schrodinger equation in threedimensions: central potentials, angular momentum.
Hydrogen atom. The periodic table.
Electron spin. Pauli matrices and the Zeeman effect. Paramagnetic resonance. SternGerlach experiment.
Advanced topics according to time frame  to be determined.

Attention:You must submit solutions to at least 70% of the course exercise sheets. Nevertheless, all the material will in principle be included in the final exam. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourselves with the material that appears in exercise sheets you have chosen not to submit solutions to.
The final grade for the course will be determined by the grade of the final exam.
