Course description

From the moment there was film, dancing was filmed. From the moment synchronised
sound joined the moving image, there was singing on film. These form the base for the
film musical - A popular genre always in the process of being redefined artistically and
theoretically. Is this genre confined to a particular visual or musical style? Does it have a
specific subject matter or narrative construct?
In this course we will get to know the history of the film musical, and discuss the social,
aesthetic, and philosophical issues created and represented by it. During the course, we
will view and discuss classical hollywood films, alongside later films which attempt to
push the boundaries of the form. We will see how hollywood influences and is influenced
by international film musicals, technological advancements in the film industry, and
experimental film. We will read and ask questions regarding the many tensions these
films portray: The tension between art and entertainment, between visual pleasure and
objectification of the dancer, and between the narratives of dance and song as pure self
expression and the oppressive structures they maintain. We will do all this using theories
and perspectives of history, feminism, post-colonialism and phenomenology alongside
an analysis of the editing, cinematography, choreography, and sound in musical films.
