0668259401French Culture Master Pieces from the Middle- Ages to the XVIIIth century

Obligatory

This course will be held in Hebrew and will be based upon recent Hebrew translations of the masterpieces of French Literature from the Middle-Ages to the XVIIIth century. The works will be analyzed while focusing on their historical, ideological and social contexts and dealing with the changing notion of the “canon”. The development of the different genres, thematics and styles will be presented through the significant stages in French culture from the Middle- Ages, Renaissance, XVIIth and the Enlightenment. We shall also focus on the writer’s changing status and the change in the conditions of his or her writing, analyzing the role of political authority on the development of language and literature as well as the various institutions created to control them and their writers. All texts will be available on the course’s site in Hebrew and in French together with scientific articles in Hebrew and in English.  

Intermediary exam : 20%

Final exam : 80%
