Literary Realism: Theory and Practice (MA seminar)
This seminar will be devoted to examining different theoretical and historical approaches to the study of realism. We will read major theorists—including Georg Lukács, Ian Watt, Bakhtin, Amy Kaplan and others—in conjunction with major realist landmarks from the Anglo-American tradition, in an effort to assess together the relative merits and shortcomings of the different critical approaches to the genre.
Requirements: midterm paper, seminar paper
