Course description
The nation-state – a centralized territorial unit ruled “in the name of the people” – is the dominant form of political organization in today’s world. No plot of land on the planet can be found – even the most barren and remote – which is not claimed by a state. Similarly, almost all individuals in the world “belong” to a state and are entirely dependent on it to vouch for their rights. In the past two decades, this national order faces the challenge of globalization, meaning the expansion of interactions and interdependence between different states and societies. Does globalization spell the end of the nation-state’s hegemony or, on the contrary, reinforces its dominance? How do state institutions change to adapt to this new order? The course will survey the formation and transformations of the nation-state while emphasizing three key aspects: race and ethnicity, citizenship and migration
