The course will examine in a critical manner the development of film theory since the 1920's to the late 1970's. We'll discuss issues like cinema's ontology, cinema as language or as a system of signs (semiotics) and how does filmic production, consumption and representation reflect different systems of power and ideologies in society. The discussions will be accompanied by close reading of seminal theoretical texts.
