Course description

What is independent theater? What and who is it independent from, and what defines it as such? What are the characteristics of the local independent theater and in what way do these characteristics affect the aesthetic, conceptual and organizational aspects of theater works that arise within it? Throughout the semester, the course will include a theoretical discussion of these questions and the questions of the status of the independent artist in the field of Israeli theater. We will examine how an independent creator in Israel deals with budgetary and political difficulties and how to bridge the desire for independent creation with the necessity that accompanies it - the need to be the manager and producer of yourself at all stages of the creative process. In parallel to these discussions, we will practice the various stages of producing independent work - from the initial stage of developing the idea, through budgeting, presentations to festivals, theaters and foundations, forming a creative team, running the production and managing the budget . This will be done through the development of a personal project and practice of the various stages in bringing up an independent work into life on stage.
