Course description

In this course, we will read one of the primary texts in Chinese philosophy - Zhuangzi. A book that is a unique exemplar of philosophical thought and poetic writing. The Zhuangzi uses fables, jokes, unanswered questions, imaginary dialogues, and riddles to address fundamental human issues such as identity, knowledge, the function of language, ethics, etc.  The Zhuangzi will serve us as a guidebook for a philosophical quest in China and beyond in an attempt to answer the question: what is the “Way” and how does one step in it. True to the spirit of the Zhuangzi we will wander freely through different thought traditions from Confucianism and Mohism, to Zen Buddhism and even Alice in Wonderland.
