Course description

This course offers a new orientation into the question of Western culture as an outcome of a
dialogue and encounter with Eastern culture and Arabic thought. The major aim of this
course is suggesting a theoretical frame which does not fall into orientalist thesis, yet moves
beyond the critical view on Western desire of power to deal with dialectics of migrations,
conversions and translations of knowledge and experience. The discussion will include a
series of encounters (since Paulus, Augustin through Herder and Goethe to Kafka and
others), stressing also the role of Jewish thinkers and artists as double agents of the Western
culture.
