Course description

Futurism is one of the most influential as well notorious cultural movements of the 20th century. We will learn about Fascist Italian Futurism , its precursors and ancestors. We will read Futurist literary works and manifestos, observe futurist works from any field of creation (such as art, architecture, and music), examine movements influenced by Italian Futurism (among others Futurism in Russia and Vorticism in England), and observe the movement’s far-reaching mark on almost any field of creation in the 20th and 21st centuries (such as Science Fiction literature and Film). We will explore the blurred boundaries between Futurist literature and the visual arts, between the realms of literature and the world of advertising, and between writing and performance. We will discuss the dynamics of poetics and politics, technology and gender, and the possible influence of the Futurist trajectory on the contemporary cultural field. We will also discuss the surprising influences of Futurism on Hebrew writers over the years.
