Course description

Course Description

In the core of this course stands the concept of ribāṭ in the Qur’ān , verses  8:60 and 3:200. We will study two significant aspects of this concept in two aspects: the first one is according with its intra-qur’ānic context and the second one is in accordance with the qur’ānic exegesis. We will examine how this concept has found its expression in the Jāhili poetry, pre-Islamic history, early Islamic tradition (Hadith), Arabic lexicography, Islamic law and historiography of the Muslim conquests in the first three centuries AH. We will deal as well with the concept of thughūr, which is frequently mentioned and closely related to the concept of ribāṭ.

The course is based on texts from the early centuries AH. They will be attached with questions and bibliographic material and sent to the students by E-mail. The students will prepare them for the following week.

At the end of the course the students will get a final task.
