Course description

The goal of this course is to study the role that Zionism and Israel have played in the Islamic discourse since the end of the 19th Century and until today. The students will study Zionism and Israel through Islamist ideologies (starting with Hassan al-Banna and the Muslims Brothers, continuing with Palestinian Hamas and ending with the so called 'Islamic State'; Arab Nationalism which dominated the discourse mainly during the Nasserist era of the 1950's and the 1960's; state official religious establishments; and Arab liberal thinkers. This variety of perspectives reflects the complex approach of different Islamic streams to the West in general and to Israel in particular, as well as to the latter's role in internal Arab debates.
