Course description

The course will discuss the social, religious and cultural status of women in the Islamic world. What do compete branches of Sunni Islam think about the place of women in Muslim society? How Hijab has been applied throughout history in various societies? Are Islam and feminism opposing? Our journey will begin in the Qur'an, Hadith and early Shar'i rulings, and will continue with a review of the writings of Islamist, liberal as well as Muslim-feminist thinkers of the modern era. During the semester we will watch films and read classical books dealing with these issues.
