Course description

The course will focus mainly on modern Shi'i texts, but it is necessary to know the historical and political background of the ancient Shi'a by reading theoretical research material and reading of ancient original texts, primarily from the beginning of the movement and, of course, research literature on modern Shi'ism. The analysis of modern rituals will focus on analyzing the situation of the modern Shī'a in comparison to its status in the classical period. In other words, to observe the development of the movement and the process of formulating the main principles of the Shi'ite doctrine, especially the imamate.

In addition to reading Shi'ite texts of a political and religious nature,  both literary prose and poetry wil be read.

We shall examine in particular the writings of the scholar Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (1935-2010), the Shi’ite cleric, one of the most important Shi’ite thinkers in the world, and one of the founders of the Hizb al-Allah organization and its spiritual leader. He is considered to be the supreme spiritual authority among the Shi’ite believers in Lebanon, and his influence in Iraq is great. For many, Fadlallah is considered to be a religious authority that exceeds the spiritual authority of Ali Khamena’i, Iran's spiritual leader.

learning method

The study will be conducted by analysis and discussion, especially in modern Shi'ite texts, by comparison and examination of the sources in classic Shi'ite texts.
