This course provides an introduction to Islamic, especially Sunni, law and its institutions. It surveys the development of law in the Middle Ages, the crystallization of the legal schools and the differences and disagreements between them, the roles of the qadi and the mufti, penal law, the relationship between law and society, the position of women, the tension between norm and reality, a.o.

Course prerequisites: Students will have passed the course "Introduction to Islam"
