Course description
This introductory lecture presents the history of the Muslim world in its first millennium, focusing on the Middle East. After discussing the main political events that form the chronological framework for the course (sixth century to the advent of the Ottomans to the Middle East in the beginning of the 16th century), we devote most of the course to social and cultural aspects of Muslim societies in the medieval Middle East. Among the issues discussed are: islamization and Arabization, state formation, court culture, urban communities, the incorporation of Turkish elites into the Muslim world, and cultural immersion and religious conversion. .
