Course description
This course reviews and analyzes the central historical processes that have taken place in the Middle East over the past two centuries, particularly the interaction between internal processes and the effects of interactions between societies in the Middle East and "The West." Moreover, the course will discuss the economic, political and cultural effects of "the West" on the region, reform efforts, Islamic and nationalist responses to domestic social crises, the rise of the territorial state following World War I, the revolutionary officers' regimes and, finally, the emergence of a range of Islamic movements.
