Course description

This seminar examines the relationship between language and emotion and its diverse appearances throughout the history of philosophy. This relationship is found in various contexts such as the origin of language, the human – animal relationship, and language’s disintegration in the face of intense emotions. We will turn to different theories of language in which the role of emotion is central and inherent to language rather than being in opposition to it and examine the ways in which language’s constitution is dependent on the presence of feelings and emotions.

The aim of the seminar is to develop the students' writing skills. The seminar will therefore be focused on writing a single paper in three stages. During the semester, the students will submit a research proposal, outline and final paper. During the writing process the students will have one-on-one meetings with the lecturer, according to a schedule set in advance. In the first meeting we will present the question and the various problems that arise from it, and discuss possible research topics for the students to work on. The details of the first meeting will be announced. Attendence in the first meeting is mandatory.
