Course description

This seminar deals with the notion of freedom in classical and contemporary Indian philosophies. We will ensemble philosophical puzzles, made of different pieces, philosophical, literary and even cinematic, to reveal different aspects of freedom – metaphysical, ethical, aesthetic and even political. Our puzzles draw on materials from the Upaniṣads and the Mahābhārata, literary chapters by Saadat Hasan Manto and Salman Rushdie, and contemporary theory by Daya Krishna, Mukund Lath and Ashis Nandy.
