Course description

How did Jewish mystics try to reconstruct Ezekiel's vision of the divine chariot? How did they try to recreate Isaiah's vision of God's chambers? We will start our course by outlining the motifs taken by Jewish mystics in the first millennium CE from the Bible while describing their own journeys to the divine worlds. Then we will discuss the new developments in Jewish mysticism that take place in the second millennium; the common terms will not be 'Chariot' and 'Chambers' anymore but 'Sefirot' and 'infinity'.

In this course we will get acquainted with the major texts of Jewish mysticism; e.g. – Sefer Yezira, Sefer HaBahir, the Zohar and the Lurianic writings.

Course requirements: regular attendance in classes and taking an exam.
