Course description

Although it has been almost a decade since the occurrence of the financial crisis which took the world by surprise, it seems that the aftershocks still influence world politics. The fact that the openness of the trade and financial systems was considered to be a dominant cause in the creation and intensification of this crisis, contributed to the rise of political powers which now aim to withdraw from globalization. This trend influences both the internal politics around the world and the relationship between many of the states in international politics. Brexit, US election results, the tense relations between China and the US are only few phenomena which cannot be analyzed without paying close attention to the reverberations of the financial crisis.

The purpose of this course is to understand the dual-way relationship between financial crises and political crises, internal and international. The first part of this course will review the political influence of some of the financial crises that took place during the 20th century. The second part will focus on the 2008 financial crisis and its influence on international politics.
