Course description
Early U.S. diplomatic history: The struggle for Independence; the French Alliance that brought victory over Britain; the struggle to defend independence against the warring powers during the Wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars; the diplomacy of continental expansion to the Pacific, which included the destruction of the American Indians as diplomatic powers; the diplomacy of slavery; and America’s coming forth as a power in global politics with the proclamation of the Monroe Doctrine. Our attention will be focused on the relation between diplomacy and deliberative politics. The readings will be drawn principally from primary sources.
