Course description

This course examines the impact of three technological revolutions of the modern, industrial era on military organization, strategic doctrine and war. In the nineteenth century, both on land and at sea, steam power and the telegraph revolutionized strategy and logistics, while machine-produced firearms revolutionized tactics. With the coming of the twentieth century, land, air and sea warfare were transformed by the advent of the internal combustion engine that gave rise to the tank, truck, airplane and submarine. Finally, the impact on war of the ongoing electronic revolution will be studied. The various factors affecting the military response to change in all these cases will be examined. No special technical knowledge is required.
