Course description
This course will examine the historical roots of Nigerian Islam since it arrival to the region during the tenth century. It will deal with processes such as ways of the arrival of Islam to the region, its spread and its universal and local characteristics. A special emphasis will be given to the development of Islam in colonial and independent Nigeria, while analyzing its relations with Christianity, the development of different currents within and featuring gender relations amongst different Muslim societies. In the end, actual topics such as the relations between democratization and religious identity, the growth of radical organizations (such as Boko Haram) will be discussed.
