Rome and the Provinces of the Roman Empire
Rome acquired an Empire which it kept together successfully for many centuries. This course will investigate what were the causes of this success: a combination of military suppression of resistance and integration of subjugated peoples. The tools were the Roman army, the stimulation of urbanization, organization of communication, the grant of Roman citizenship to the inhabitants of the provinces and a fine legal system We shall read sources and modern literature to gain an understanding of these processes.
