Course description
This introductory course familiarizes students with the way historians work. We shall learn how to find sources and use them, how to analyze texts, how to conceptualize, document, and write like an academic historian. We shall encounter sophisticated ways to look for materials in the library and on the web, and analyze a wide range of sources, individually and as a group. We shall discuss the distinctions between evidence, facts, and interpretations, as well as basic concepts such as "historical process" or "historical period." We shall ask what a historical research question is, and how to answer it. This course serves as a crucial stepping stone for acquiring the skills and insights of the historical discipline.

Groups 1 and 2 will work on the basis of topics related to the history of Christianity and the Middle Ages. Groups 3 and 4 will work on the basis of topics and questions related to the history of the nineteenth century.
