Course description

Course Objectives: Introducing the Marx-Freudian Synthesis of the Frankfurt School, especially of Erich Fromm's early works and Herbert Marcuse.

Course Topics: Conceptual introduction of Marx' Historical-Materialism and Freud's Theory of Instincts; The Freudian Marxism of Fromm; The Concept of Mother's Right; The historical understanding of Freud's Theory of Instincts; Oedipus Complex and the Psychic Thermidor; Non-Repressive Reality-Principle; Freudian-Marxist Feminism.

Method of Teaching: Introductory lectures, guided reading, classroom discussion and personal tutoring for writing seminar papers.

Main Texts: E.Fromm, The Crisis of Psychoanalysis; H.Marcuse, Eros and Civilization.

A Bibliography of primary and secondary literature will be distributed at the beginning of the semester.

Student Assignment: A seminar or referat paper.
