Course description

The seminar is concerned with the meaning of "divine providence" and with the diverse manners in which it was understood throughout the ages. We will examine conceptions of providence in terms of intervention in the ordinary state of things, as well as conceptions that interiorize God's providence, describing it in terms of a particular human capacity to comprehend or to love. We will focus on the Maimonidean, Kierkegaardian and Weilian conceptions of God's providence, which belong to the latter group, and on the relation between suffering and love in the life of the believer who enjoys God's providence to its fullest.

Credit for the seminar requires: 1) Participating in, at least, two thirds of the meetings. 2) Submitting 4 book-reviews. The length of each will consist of a single paragraph and they will not be marked; and 3) the submission of a written paper in the end of the seminar.  Students who significantly contribute to the discussion will be awarded up to 5 extra points for their participation.
