The seminar will be devoted to close reading in the writings of J. G. Herder's (1744-1803). We will discuss Herder’s ideas regarding the philosophy of history, his criticism of the Enlightenment, literature, aesthetic theory and the philosophy of language. Students will be required to read from Herder’s writings each week and submit a few short papers during the semester.
