Spinoza’s “Theological-Political Treatise,” anonymously published in 1670, offers an innovative method of Biblical exegesis and poses a serious challenge to some of the most controversial issues discussed in the Dutch Republic of his time. The seminar is dedicated to a close reading of this text. We will also discuss Spinoza’s theoretical and practical objectives in this work, his main motivations for publishing it, and the underlying metaphysical foundations of Spinoza’s views on the relations between ethics, politics, and religion.
