Course description

In this course we consider several key topics in the philosophy of language—among them the questions what is linguistic meaning, how language and world are related, and how language and thought are connected to each other. We consider these questions and others by considering the writings of several major philosophers of the second half of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century. In particular, we discuss the views of Frege (often thought of as the originator of modern day philosophy of language), Russell, Carnap and Wittgenstein.
