Advanced Course קורס בחירה
In this course we will study the writings of Walt Whitman – arguably the single most important, and controversial, poet in American history. With the 1855 Leaves of Grass, Whitman presented an innovative book of poetry to the world that shattered poetic and social conventions, exploring themes like sexuality, the body, race, slavery, religion, war, and democracy. The legacy of Leaves of Grass remains powerful and relevant even today. We will read many of Whitman’s most famous works and discuss topics in scholarly debate. We will also examine Whitman’s impact on literatures of diverse cultures and ethnicities, not only in the United States, but throughout the world.
The requirements for the course will be a midterm essay and a final paper.
