Course description
Legal Aspects of Work-Family Integration
The course will focus on learning and analyzing the legal arrangements and social norms which shape the lives of workers with familial responsibilities (parents; people who provide care for ailing parents or partners, and the like). We will reveal the stereotypes and social norms reflected in the law and courts decisions about the “proper” gender roles. We will also interrogate the role of the law in shaping the institution of the family as well as the structure of the workplace in a way which affects men’s and women’s ability to integrate their familial responsibilities and paid employment. Furthermore, we will analyze work-family legal arrangements comparatively, and examine several solutions adopted by other countries. We will interrogate whether Israel could and should adopt some of these solutions, while taking into account each country’s specific context and different characteristics.
