Course description
The Human Rights Clinic
The Program combines theoretical studies and clinical experience in the field of human rights. The theoretical discussions will shed light on different aspects of the human rights field, seeking to render the practice more reflexive and informed. Thus, for example, we will discuss the relationship between human rights and social rights, in protecting human rights through public law versus protecting them through private law, in the role of the cause lawyer in promoting justice, and the dilemmas involved in cause lawyering. In the practical part of the program students will work (with supervision of the clinical professors) no diverse cases, all of which concern promoting human rights in Israel. The cases that the clinic pursues change from year to year, and usually concern discrimination on the basis of nationality, sexuality, sex, and religion, access to justice, transparency of government, and more. During the year we will discuss issues pertaining to clinical activism, through discussing the cases we pursue, guest lectures by key activists, and field trips. In addition to participating in the weekly class sessions, students are expected to take part in the clinical work throughout the academic year, and to submit a final paper.
