Ebbinghaus, founder of the experimental study of memory, said that psychology has a long past but a short history. The former refers to models of psychology held from antiquity to modern times preceding psychology as a science. The latter refers to the century of psychology as a modern empirical science. Models, methods, and modes of interpretation from both epochs will be discussed and elucidated in class. Demonstrations will be based on the original texts and methods with special emphasis given the ways that psychological method and theory evolved to their present form.
