The goal of this course is to train students in the use of different qualitative research methods. The course will lay the foundations for understanding the stages of qualitative research, including data collection and types of analysis. Different types of qualitative research will be explored via readings and discussion of published studies. The goal of such an endeavor is to integrate theoretical understanding of the logic of these methods as well as practical training and experience in their use. The methods to be discussed include – observation, different types of interviews, different types of textual analysis, archival work, analysis of documents, etc.

Course requirements: reading and active participation in class, submission of final project that includes report and analysis of practical experiences in the application of qualitative research methods.
