The field of civil military relations is in the intersection of comparative politics, International Relations and strategic studies. Hence, the field is being investigated from a variety of theoretical angles: democratization, military strategies, decision-making etc. In this course we will examine some important issues, such as: the mechanisms of the civilian echelon to ensure the armed forces’ subordination, the ability and methods of the army to intervene in politics and shape policy, the linkage between civil-military relations and the consolidation of democracy etc. We will focus on the Israeli case, while comparing it to other relevant cases from the literature.
