Course description
This course assumes no prior knowledge of the Middle East. It will analyze the international relations of the Middle East from both historical and theoretical perspectives. Hence, the goal of the course is both to acquire the skill to think theoretically about the history of this complex region, as well as to think critically about the theories we currently have in international relations by using the historical evidence available. Finally, this course will certainly be useful for those of you who are fascinated with the various ongoing policy debates regarding this important region. The outline of the course is a combination of a chronological overview with a thematic focus. This means that each week we will not only cover the main events in the period under examination but also explore conceptual angles and theoretical questions which can help shed light on that period, putting it into a broader perspective. Requirements: active participation and a final paper.
