Course description
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO ACQUAINT THE STUDENT WITH THE THEORIES, RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND CONCEPTS THAT ARE CENTRAL TO THE FIELD OF COMPARATIVE POLITICS.
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE PHENOMENON OF THE MODERN STATE, WILL EXAMINETHE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN STATES, THE HISTORICAL CHANGES THAT STATES HAVE GONE THROUGH, AND DIFFERENT EXPLANATIONS FOR THOSE TRANSFORMATIONS. THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE WILL ENGAGE THE ISSUE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE QUESTION WHY HAVE SOME STATES BECOME MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN OTHERS. THE SECOND PART WILL FOCUS ON THE ISSUE OF DEMOCRACY AND ITS PREREQUISITES. IN THE THIRD PART, WE WILL ANALYZE THE CHANGING BOUNDARIES OF THE STATE AS REFLECTED IN ISSUES SUCH AS SOVEREIGNTY, CITIZENSHIP AND THE ECONOMY.
