Course description

The seminar will critically examine issues of gender and sexuality in cinema from post-Laura Mulvey psychoanalytic feminist film theory, the women’s cinema debates, to contemporary queer theory, exploring topics such as gender and the body in modern horror films, the female voice and the “acoustic mirror,” fantasy and the mise-en-scène of desire, theories women’s cinema, queer temporality, gender performativity, and queer anti-sociality, viewing films such as North by Northwest, Boys don’t Cry, High Heels, Alien, Paris is Burning, Finding Nemo, and many others.
