Course description

What is “Protestant”?

Hard working, good at saving, no indulgence? Welcome to Protestant culture!

In this course we will examine Protestant paradigms through the texts of the principal reformers (Luther; Calvin) and discuss contemporary research on their understandings of texts, work and equality. We will ask if it possible to abstract a “Protestant method” from its historical context. If it is, then why is food tasty in Switzerland, why do Germans vacation three times a year, and why are American evangelicals not leading the struggle for gender equality?

How can a “Protestant Hermeneutics” be described 500 years after the Reformation in Europe?
