Course description
The course will provide an anthropological perspective on the journey and immigration experiences. We will begin by focusing on ethnographic methodology, and discuss the ethnographer’s work and ability to learn cultural phenomena in transformation, and examine the unique challenges facing ethnographic methodology during the process of a journey.
We will then turn to ethnographic research on journeys in Africa, among them pilgrimage, backpacking, internal migration, and refugeeism. We will discuss the significance of ethnography in understanding immigration and journey processes and will examine how these processes affect – and are affected by – societies, cultures, and the places around them.
Course requirements: Attendance. Final assignment.
