Course description
An introductory Bachelor level course designed for 2nd and 3rd year students.
The course presents a systematic review of the main diseases which have shaped human development in space and time. Throughout a historical approach is adopted; from the Paleolithic to modern time. 15 major infectious diseases are analyzed in sequence and detail, focusing on their epidemiological repercussions on the geographic and demographic distributions of populations. The affect of disease on cultural change and ascendancy are critically reviewed.
Main topics include: Definitions of health and disease; epidemiological concepts and models; spatial interactions of disease, climatic aspects of disease; disease cycles; endemic & epidemic diseases; pandemics.
Bibliography:
The lectures are based on extensive readings and PowerPoint presentations sent to all participants every week ahead of time.
Students are referred to several major National and international public health and epidemiology sources for specific readings (WHO; CDC; NIH; BMJ; JAMA; NEJM).
Prerequisite:
There are no prerequisites for this introductory course
Grade:
Regular attendance is a stated default requirement in this medically oriented course; and is adhered to without enforcing.
The grade is based on a Final Exam (100%)
