Environmental and Social Justice
Course Description:
Early paradigms of environmental ethics centered on issues related to nature, non-human animals and the protection of "the environment" as well as humans from ecological harms and degradation. In the 70s and 80s a new environmental paradigm developed: the Environmental Justice Movement. This movement claimed that environmental harms and benefits are not distributed equally in society; that environmental pollution and hazardous industrial plants are often located near socially and economically weak neighborhoods, while minorities suffer most risks, to the extent that this phenomenon was also termed environmental racism. More broadly, environmental justice deals with questions of the distribution of environmental goods (public space, clean air, water), procedural justice. The course also discusses gender justice, intergenerational justice and global justice (between states), especially in the context of globalization. The course will also address transportation, public infrastructure, urban space and the planning. The course also discusses the theoretical background of social justice in general, which is now a central theme in the political social discourse in Israel. The course will include three tours which demonstrates key issues of environmental justice in Israel.
