Course description
Alongside the Masoretic Text, the Septuagint—the Greek translation of the Bible—is the most important witness to the text of the Hebrew Bible. In this course, we shall read—both in the original language and in reverse Hebrew translation—a selection of chapters from the Septuagint to the Books of Kingdoms (Samuel–Kings), comparing these with other witnesses of the biblical text, particularly the MT and the biblical scrolls from Qumran. Discussing questions of textual history, translation technique, and hermeneutics, we shall trace the way in which the book was composed and its central religious beliefs.
