Course description
Geez is the old Ethiopian language which had been in use since the 4th century. It is not a spoken language anymore but is used in Ethiopian church and also by Ethiopian Jews. Numerous ancient texts are preserved in Geez, even translations of texts whose original is lost. Study of Geez is important for Semitic linguistics since it is an old Semitic language. Besides it is important for those who are interested in Ethiopian history and for those who are investigating Biblical texts. The study begins with learning the unique Ethiopian script, the phonology and morphology of the language. This will be followed by the reading of Biblical translations and ancient Ethiopian chronicles.
