Course description
The course discusses parenting styles found in the Hebrew Bible and depicted in biblical research. The introduction includes a survey of evidence for three types of familial authorities occurring in the Bible: patriarchy, fratriarchy, and matriarchy. The course continues with discussions regarding patterns of father-son relations, father-daughter relations, and mother-son relations. Parenting in the biblical genres of law and wisdom are also examined. Many of the discussions are accompanied by examples for parallel accounts of parenting found in Canaanite texts and Greek mythology (the Aqhat epic, the Theogony of Hesiod, Iphigenia in Aulis). The course ends with an examination of the relationship between God and Israel, which take form of a parent-child relationship. Central metaphors regarding God-Israel relations shall be pointed out as well.
