Course description

This tutorial in the subject of narratology accompanies the “Introduction to Narratology” course. The function of the tutorial is to clarify principles of the theory of prose literature by widening the scope of the basic definitions that are to be studied in the main course and underpinning them by close readings of short stories. Each tutorial will focus on a chosen topic within the theory of prose literature; and on readings and class discussions of those stories on the syllabus which best exemplify relevant themes and principles. These tutorials will discuss several dominant features of narratology while engaging in both traditional and critical readings of selected items of Hebrew and world literature.

The following are some of the issues that will find focus in the tutorials: the significant role of the plot and its several genres; elements of its structure: the dramatic event, turning points, conflicts, denouement and closure. The differing roles of character will be considered, their significance and type such as stereotyping and individualization, hero and anti-hero. Further issues will dwell on the interaction between author and narrator, perspectives and narrative types, symbol, motif and intertextuality in the story.
